A time-proven board gate for pastures, driveways and gardens, drawn on a vintage USDA Cooperative Extension sheet (Calif. 133). Seven rails — six 1×4 and a 1×6 at the bottom, spaced tight near the ground and wider up top — are sandwiched between paired 1×4 battens and bolted at every crossing, so there is no joinery to cut. The hinge end is a 7'-0" stile of a 4×4 and a 2×4; a long 1×4 head brace runs from the bottom of the latch end up to the top of that stile and holds the free end up, and a short brace carries the load down into the bottom hinge corner. This edition keeps every dimension, specifies modern lumber, galvanized carriage bolts and off-the-shelf band hinges, and adds an optional cable and turnbuckle behind the head brace so you can take up any sag over the years.

Questions about this plan

What are the finished dimensions?

15'-9" W × 4'-0" H (480 × 122 cm); hinge stile 7'-0" (213 cm). The drawings are dimensioned in feet and inches; the materials list, cut list and steps give metric sizes alongside.

What skill level do I need, and how long does it take?

It's rated beginner. Expected build time: 1 weekend (6–8 h). Each step names the tools it uses, so it's written for first-time builders.

How much does it cost to build?

Roughly US$180–260 in materials at typical US lumber-yard prices. Prices vary a lot by region, so price the materials list at your local yard before you start.

What tools do I need?

Level (4-ft), Circular saw, Drill/driver + bits, Drill bits: 5/16" and 13/16", Socket & wrench set, Hammer, Clamps, Paint brush, Post-hole digger, Tamping bar, Shovel, Wheelbarrow or mixing tub, plus a tape, pencil, safety glasses, hearing protection and gloves. The interactive checklist on this page lets you tick off what you already own.

Is this an original USDA plan?

Yes. It is restored from Calif. 133 EX 5064, a public-domain USDA Cooperative Extension plan. We redrew it as a modern build guide with a materials list, metric sizes, a cut list and clear illustrated step-by-step assembly drawings, every part drawn. Every dimension follows the original drawing, and the original sheet is reproduced inside.

Can a beginner follow it?

Yes. Each step is a single job with its own drawing: the parts that step adds are shaded, the nails, screws and bolts it drives are marked where they go, and the hardware for that step is listed beside it. An exploded drawing at the front shows how the whole build goes together before you cut anything.

Can I build it for something other than farm use?

Yes. The plan includes a remix page that turns the same build into a ranch driveway entry (ranch entries & curb appeal), showing what changes and what stays the same.

What do I get?

A 20-page print-ready PDF (US Letter) to download after purchase. It prints well at home or at a copy shop, and reads fine on a tablet in the workshop.
