Entry Coat Rail with Pegs and a Shelf

Built in home workshops more than a century ago, and redrawn for the way you build today.

Step by step

Every part drawn. Every fastener marked.

Each step is one job with its own clear drawing: the parts it adds are shaded, every nail and screw position is marked, and the hardware and tools sit right beside it. An exploded view shows how the whole build goes together before you make a single cut.

Materials

One rail, any length; buy straight boards. Cutting layout: Fig. 2. Work safely. Clamp what you saw; glasses, ear protection and a dust mask; rags flat to dry (fire risk); a step stool, never a chair or a box. A stud can hide a wire or a pipe: scan, and drill only to the tape flag. Drill with two hands, clamp the block, ease off at the exit: a 1" bit grabs.

Questions about this plan

What are the finished dimensions?

24 / 36 / 48" (610 / 914 / 1219 mm) rail, 5 1/2" (140 mm) shelf; pegs 63" (1600 mm) up, kids' 39"; rated 70 / 95 / 70 lb (32 / 43 / 32 kg). The drawings are dimensioned in feet and inches; the materials list, cut list and steps give metric sizes alongside.

What skill level do I need, and how long does it take?

It's rated beginner. Expected build time: A weekend, then 3 days of drying before the load test. Each step names the tools it uses, so it's written for first-time builders.

How much does it cost to build?

Roughly US$40–90 in materials at typical US lumber-yard prices. Prices vary a lot by region, so price the materials list at your local yard before you start.

What tools do I need?

Pencil; Speed square; Level, 24" (610 mm) or longer; Stud finder with wire and pipe detection; Masking or painter's tape (the depth flags on the bits, the glue masking); A business card (the load test's gauge); Circular saw with a clamped straightedge guide (rail and shelf); Handsaw or backsaw for the bracket squares and the pegs (a miter box helps); Sawhorses or scrap lumber to cut over; Sanding block; Sandpaper 120, 180 and 220 grit; Foam brush or lint-free rags; Drill/driver with a nose 1 3/4" (44 mm) or less across, 1/8" (3 mm), 9/32" (7 mm) and 11/64" (4.5 mm) bits, a 1" (25 mm) spade bit at least 6" (152 mm) long, a long 5/32" (4 mm) bit at least 5" (127 mm) long for the wall, a countersink bit and a #2 cross-head bit; a 7/16" socket on a 1/4" hex adapter (under 13/16" (21 mm) across) for the lag screws; 2 clamps that open 4" (102 mm), a rubber mallet; A helper to hold the rail's far end; A sturdy step stool, never a chair; wood glue; Scrap: a board to drill over, a straight 1x2 as a saw guide, a 2x4 scrap 12" (305 mm) long for two blocks, a 6" (152 mm) offcut of the 2x6 as the guide block, cord and a rag for the loops, 5 lb (2.3 kg) sacks of rice for the load test: 4, 4 or 2 for the 24, 36 or 48" rail (kids' 2); plus a tape, pencil, safety glasses, hearing protection and gloves. Where does this plan come from?

It is an original Square & Furrow design for today's homes, produced with AI-assisted tools and checked by our build model. You get a materials list, metric sizes, a cut list for standard lumber and clear illustrated step-by-step assembly drawings, every part drawn. Sizes are in feet and inches, with metric alongside.

Can a beginner follow it?

Yes. Each step is a single job with its own drawing: the parts that step adds are shaded, the nails, screws and bolts it drives are marked where they go, and the hardware for that step is listed beside it. An exploded drawing at the front shows how the whole build goes together before you cut anything.

What do I get?

A 13-page print-ready PDF (US Letter) to download after purchase. It prints well at home or at a copy shop, and reads fine on a tablet in the workshop.
